Anaïs Civit López: Site-specific. A methodological proposal to develop the capacities of observation and creation of artistic projects with space

This work arises from the methodology developed and applied in the Interdisciplinary Attitudes subject of the Fine Arts Degree at the University of Barcelona. Although it seems obvious that the limits of the disciplines are diffuse in current artistic production, the truth is that the regulated teachings of both secondary and higher education still show remnants of this separation of disciplines and this rigidity of forms. Thus, the subject Interdisciplinary Attitudes, from the fourth year of the Degree, tries to provide this transversal vision where the disciplines merge; where the work is essentially articulated from the format of the installation (understood as sculpture as space) and aims to offer tools for observation, interrelation and work with space in capital letters. To do this, we want to expose a dynamic of development based on small assignments and teaching cards in the key of discovery methodology. Specifically, we will carry out an analysis, explanation of the methodology and sample of results and of the pedagogical benefits and for the growth of the students. To reveal the potential of this methodology, we will focus on the dynamics that we have called “Site-specific”. This is divided into two phases: in the first, students are provided with a teaching sheet in which they are proposed to make an installation in the classroom space, linking it to an abstract word or concept. A list of words such as limit, void, breath, line, etc. is provided. In the first place, students must make a meticulous observation of the classroom, observing those accidents in space, shapes, lights, and static or moving objects. Next, they must look up the definition of the word in one or more languages and choose a meaning. The objective is to develop the spatial, observation and resolution capacity with certain conditions and to make a proposal for artistic creation in which they work, without being conscious, with their own language, their method of creation and exploring their capacities. In the second phase, after pooling and collective debate, pairs are formed to develop the same exercise, but in the outer space and the natural environment of the faculty with the same conditions, but with the challenge of creating an installation that contemplates the two concepts of the group members.
