María del Carmen Bellido-Márquez: The meaning of the thread in Classical Mythology, Literature and Art and its vindictive value in Contemporary Art

The research presented in this work has been carried out within the Acis & Galatea project. The text analyzes literary, pictorial and sculptural contributions related to the use of thread, weaving and the work of sewing, weaving, embroidery, etc. that have the meaning of daily and harmonious work that women develop in classical culture and their new use as tools in the artistic vindication of it in contemporary art.
The objective of this study is to assess to what extent the thread has gone from being an element of representation used to symbolize the future of life, the eternal feminine labor of making and undoing diaries or the love and cunning of the loved one embodied in the classical world (mythological, literary and artistic) to be a vehicle or tool presented in contemporary art as an element to vindicate the broad place of women in today's society, considering different variants and possible conceptions.
The methodology used is qualitative and is based on a theoretical-plastic investigation; It contemplates the revision of texts and plastic works of classical and contemporary artists (the latter, especially women), through a common theme that unites them, the thread in culture and the arts, establishing a comparative relationship between them that allows making connections. of mythological, symbolic, literary and artistic interest.
The considerations to take into account, after the analysis carried out in this research, show that the thread has been used metaphorically in classical mythology linked to women in their tasks, obligations and appointments, in addition to men in their insight. Nor have Literature and traditional plastic arts been unrelated to their citation or representation linked to the same themes.
Likewise, weaving, thread and their working techniques in current art are part of a very diverse group of works that, mainly, many women artists use to defend their equality in society, their feminine condition, their gender and their social role. It has gone from signifying life and a condition of subjugated femininity, to being included in plastic works in a physical way with a sense of connection and an element that eliminates inequalities and differential barriers so that the individual is fully integrated into the world to which he belongs on an equal footing. opportunities and considerations.
