Fernando Bayona: The Traitorous Memory: Metaphotography, photographic archive, collective memory and artistic work

The communication proposes an approach to the photographic series La memoria traidora, an experimental artistic research project that uses the rich photographic backgrounds of the centenary ABC archive as its plastic base. The series explores the ideas of error and failure, and their cyclical repetition in the evolution of human history.
The supposed veracity of the photographic image as a document, the way in which it is used by the media, and the analytical and scientific way in which an archive manages its funds, placed in relation to memories and the more or less chaotic way and subjective characteristic of human memory, are the bases on which the research lines of the project are articulated. For the artist, our way of remembering, of bringing events to the present, causes them to be distorted and overlapping, causing a perception of reality that will change depending on the context.
